FLAT, SEMI-GLOSS, GLOSSY: HOW TO CLEAN PAINTED WALLS WITHOUT DAMAGING PAINT

Life happens, and sometimes those little mishaps end up on your walls.  From fingerprints to crayon masterpieces (we’ve all been there!), keeping your painted walls clean is important. But using the wrong cleaning method can damage the paint finish.

What Are the Materials You Will Need?

  • Microfiber cloths (lint-free cloths work too!)
  • Soft sponges
  • Bucket
  • Warm water
  • Dish soap (optional)
  • White vinegar (optional)
  • Baking soda (optional)

For stubborn stains, here’s a recipe for you:

Mix 1 teaspoon of dish soap, ¼ teaspoon of white vinegar, and 1 quart of warm water in your bucket.

What to Do Before You Begin

  • Always test any cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area of your wall first. Similarly, this is to ensure it doesn’t cause discoloration.
  • Remove any wall hangings or furniture that might be in the way.
  • Lay down a drop cloth to protect your floors from drips.

Here’s how to clean it gently:

Dust

Use a dry microfiber cloth to remove dust and cobwebs.

Light Cleaning

If you have minor smudges or fingerprints, dampen your microfiber cloth with just warm water and gently wipe the affected area.

For Stains

If you have a stubborn stain, make your all-purpose cleaner recipe (above) and dampen your microfiber cloth with the solution. Wipe the stain gently in a circular motion. Rinse the cloth frequently and avoid scrubbing, as this can damage the flat finish.

How to Clean Painted Walls with Semi-Gloss Paint

Here’s how to clean it:

Dust

Dust is similar to flat paint. So, start by removing dust with a dry microfiber cloth.

Cleaning

For most dirt and grime, dampen your microfiber cloth with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Wipe the walls in sections, rinsing the cloth often.

Stubborn Stains

For tougher stains, use your all-purpose cleaner recipe. Similarly, dampen your sponge with the solution and gently scrub the stain. Rinse the sponge frequently and avoid aggressive scrubbing.

How to Clean Painted Walls with Glossy Paint

Dust

Use a dry microfiber cloth to remove dust.

Cleaning

Mix a few drops of dish soap in a bucket of warm water. Dip your sponge and wring it out until damp, not soaking. Clean the walls in sections, rinsing the sponge often.

Stubborn Stains

For tougher stains, create a paste of baking soda and water. Apply the paste to the stain and let it sit for 10 minutes. Wipe the area clean with a damp sponge and rinse.

Removing Tough Stains and Scuff Marks

For scuff marks from furniture or crayon masterpieces, gently use a magic eraser.  Only use light pressure in a circular motion, and test it in an inconspicuous area first.

Keeping Your Painted Walls Clean and Protected

Here are some tips to keep your painted walls looking fresh between cleanings:

  • Touch up spills immediately
  • Minimize dust
  • Mind your furniture placement
  • Doormats are your friend
