Laminate cabinets are widely used and inexpensive in kitchens and bathrooms. However, they can begin to appear old or used after some time has elapsed. Laminate cabinets can be painted to give them a new look and change the appearance of your kitchen or bathroom without spending a lot of money.
How to Paint Laminate Cabinets?
It is also good to know that laminate cabinets can be painted, although it is slightly more complex than painting service of other surfaces. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to paint laminate cabinets?:
Materials:
- Drop cloths
- Painter’s tape
- Safety glasses and mask
- Sandpaper
- TSP or deglaze
- Lint-free rags
- Primer for laminate surfaces
- Paint for laminate surfaces
- Paint brushes
- Foam roller
- Caulk
- Cabinet hardware
Steps:
Clean the Cabinets
The first procedure of cabinet painting is to wash the cabinets to eliminate grease, dust, or dirt. Employ a TSP solution or a deglaze as per the manufacturer’s guidelines. Wear safety glasses and gloves while using these cleaning products. After washing, wash the cabinets with clean water and wait for them to dry.
Sand the Cabinets
After the cabinets are washed and dried, it is time to sand them. Sanding is required to make the surface of the laminate rough so that the paint can easily adhere to it. For the first sanding, use 120-grit sandpaper, and for the second round, use 220-grit sandpaper. It is important to sand all the parts of the cabinets, doors, frames, and sides. Clean off any dust with a soft cloth without lint.
Apply Painter’s Tape
Use painter’s tape to tape off areas you do not wish to paint, such as countertops, backsplashes, and walls.
Prime the Cabinets
Select a primer for laminate surfaces and apply it. Primer helps the paint stick better and gives it a better surface to cover. Wipe with a brush where corners and other tight spaces are, and then use a foam roller to apply the primer to the flat areas. Let the primer dry thoroughly, as recommended by the manufacturer of the primer you have used.
Paint the Cabinets
Now it is time to paint. Select a paint formulated for laminate flooring to give you the best results. Paint two thin layers of paint and allow the first layer to dry before applying the second layer. For the small intricate areas, use a brush, while for the larger areas, use a foam roller.
Remove Painter’s Tape
You should peel off the painter’s tape while the paint is still tacky. This will help prevent the paint from lifting along the edges of the tape.
Caulk
If your cabinets have gaps or seams, you can seal them with caulk. This will help give your cabinets a more finished look.
Replace Hardware
If the cabinet hardware is old or rusty, then you can change it with new hardware to complement the updated appearance of the cabinets.
